FAR Eastern University overcame NCAA defending champion Arellano University in four sets to keep its unbeaten mark in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.
Bacolod native Bernadeth Pons came through with 21 points (18 spikes, three blocks) in the 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16 win as the Lady Tamaraws raised their record to 2-0 for a share of Group A lead with National University.
Guest player Jovelyn Gonzaga added 15 and skipper Mary Palma chipped in 10 for FEU.
Lady Tamaraws coach Shaq delos Santos was pleased to see his team stepped up against the Lady Chiefs, but admitted they still have to work on limiting their unforced errors.
“Expected namin na ganyan ang game talaga kasi Arellano ‘yan defending champion sa NCAA,” he said. “Bawat kalaban namin sinasabi ko sa players na ‘wag i-underestimate.”
“Happy ako although nakita namin na hindi sila consistent (sa umpisa), pero sa third and fourth sets gumana na sila sa game,” he added.
After a second set loss, the Lady Tamaraws dominated the succeeding sets as they broke loose from a 4-4 contest in the fourth after a 16-6 run to hike the lead at 20-10 on the way to victory.
Danna Henson finished with 11 points for Arellano, while guest player Carmina Aganon and mainstay Menchie Tubiera contributed nine markers apiece.
The Lady Chiefs dropped to an even 1-1 card in a tie with University of the Philippines at third spot.
