PETROGAZZ setter Djanel Cheng is the unsung hero behind the impressive showing of imports Wilma Salas and Janisa Johnson so far in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference.
The Angels have emerged as the hottest team in the league as they swept their first three games behind the prolific duo of reinforcements Salas and Johnson.
The Cuban import Salas has been doing the damage in scoring leading all scorers with an average of 21 points in their first three games.
Johnson, the American who wound up second with 16.7 points per game, insisted that Cheng made it possible after dishing out brilliant plays to them.
“She’s the reason why I’m scoring points really because without her sets I can’t do anything,” said Johnson. “You’re killing it. And anything if I need adjustment she’s gonna do it in practice or in games she’s always willing to change and to adjust.”
Cheng, who is averaging 4.67 sets per frame, third in the best setter race, is happy that she is able to contribute to the team, which is leading the league not only because of their imports but through the locals also.
“Siyempre super happy ako kasi lahat nakaka-contribute sa team, hindi lang kami umaasa sa imports,” said Cheng, who was named player of the game with 10 excellent sets in their three-set victory over Motolite on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan City.
The former College of Saint Benilde admitted that her most of her plays are directed to the two imports.
“Nagsasabi naman sina coach na iuna na muna natin sa import so once na lumamang na tayo pwede na nating i-distribute,” Cheng said.
Johnson added that Cheng is not hard to go along with as she is ready to adjust for them, which makes the imports comfortable.
“We always give each other feedbacks so it’s comfortable to talk to her and make changes if needed,” Johnson said.
