VOLLEYBALL star Dindin Santiago expects no less than a championship ride with new team Philippine Army in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Foreign Reinforced Conference.
Despite her talent, the former National University stalwart only won a title once with the Lady Bulldogs, but with the Lady Troopers oozing with a lot of talent, Santiago is hopeful she’ll experience being part of another champion team by the time the import-laden conference ends.
The native of Tanza, Cavite have been tapped as part of the Lady Troopers’ lineup along with NU teammate Mina Aganon as two of Army’s players in Jac Alarca and Angela Nunag are candidates for soldiers and have to temporarily leave the team.
While the 21-year old Santiago has usually been the leader for most of her teams especially at NU, which won the 2013 V-League First Conference title, the thing is not the same in the case of the Lady Troopers.
“Ine-expect ko po na kaya nila akong dalhin sa championship,” Santiago told a handful of sports writer after Army defeated Meralco, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18, in the opener of the tournament on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
“Beterano sila, experienced, kaya nila akong dalhin sa championship,” she added.
Santiago expressed happiness that pressure has been lessened on her shoulders with the presence of her more experienced teammates.
“Ngayon masaya ako kasi ako naman ang dadalhin nila, ako naman ang dadalhin ng mga ate,” she said.
Aside from a championship, Santiago hopes to learn a lot from the three-time Philippine Super Liga (PSL) champion and the two-time V-League titlist.
“Lalo na sa disiplina, sa training ang aga nila, basta madami pa akong matututunan sa kanila,” she said.
Incidentally, Santiago is also in the Petron lineup in the PSL, which kicks off its second season on October 18.
Should there be a conflict in her playing schedule, Santiago made it clear her first priority is Petron.
“If ever magkakasabay ang laro, Petron ang pipiliin ko, hindi pwedeng hindi,” she said.
