UNIVERSITY of the Philippines shrugged off a half-hour power interruption at The Arena in San Juan, knocking the lights out of Iriga, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19, on Monday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Open Conference.
With the players all warmed up and ready to play, power at the stadium went out, but that didn't seem to affect the players too much as Diana Mae Carlos and Co. went on to score the quick win.
Carlos scored 13 points, skipper Kathy Bersola added nine markers, and Nicole Tiamzon and Marian Buitre chipped in with six points apiece as the Lady Maroons boosted their chances to reach the semifinals.
UP improved its win-loss card to 2-3 and still needs to win its remaining elimination round matches against National University and Laoag to have a shot at a place int eh last four.
Lady Maroons mentor Jerry Yee was glad to see his wards recover from a five-set loss to Bali Pure a week ago.
“Masaya silang naglaro and naglaro sila, execute lang that’s how we want pero ’di pa ’yan ang tao natin, we are still practicing hindi pa naman ’yan final,” said Yee.
“NU and Laoag parehong lumalaban ‘yan so magandang gauge ‘yun kung ano ba talaga ang skill level namin,” said Yee. “Ngayon ita-try namin ilabas ‘yun sa next games.”
Grazielle Bombita had 11 points, Shola Alvarez scored nine, while Karen Levina and Shallane Eniong each had six markers for Iriga, out of contention with a 1-5 record.
