CUBAN import Wilma Salas is glad to join an already cohesive team in Petro Gazz especially as she arrived the night before the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference opener on Sunday.
“It’s my first time here in the Philippines and I feel very good. I saw that the team complemented very well. I’m so happy,” Salas said.
Salas arrived on Saturday evening from Turkey and attended her first practice at 12 p.m. on Sunday before their match.
Petro Gazz defeated the defending champion Creamline in straight sets, with Salas scoring 20 points.
“I only had physical conditioning and for almost one month I have not touched a ball. It’s just my first time today but I’m feeling good,” Salas said.
Coach Arnold Laniog said it was worth all the work searching for the right reinforcement.
“Naging problem lang ang pagpunta niya ng late. Luckily pa rin na kahit dumating lang siya ng late ang bilis niyang nakapag-jell,” he said.
Salas had 18 kills and two blocks, helping American import Janisa Johnson carry the Angels to victory.
“Doon sa second import we tried to look talaga, ang dami naming sinearch na mga agents,” Laniog said.
“Nu’ng nakita namin ang video niya then since si Johnson is a little bit smaller, yung isang import we need someone na taller.”
