CREAMLINE head coach Sherwin Meneses isn’t pointing fingers at anyone even as they’ve tripped much more than usual in the last three PVL tournaments.
A silver in All-Filipino play and a preseason bronze then another battle for third awaits the Cool Smashers in the midst of a rare championship drought for the league’s most successful team.
In fact, Meneses even lauded the team’s ‘110-percent’ energy, even if it hasn’t translated to what-had-become routinary winning outcomes.
“‘Yung mga losses namin, talagang binigay ng team ‘yung 110-percent nila. ‘Yun naman ‘yung pinakamahalaga: na ibigay nila yung 110-percent nila sa mga games,” the Creamline coach said.
“Kung anuman yung resulta, hindi ka maninisi kung matalo ka o manalo. Wala naman kaming hinahanap na specific na nagkulang, may mga lapses, pero sa pagkukulang, wala naman siguro.”
It might be a bummer not to compete for titles as often as they used to, but Meneses is neither hurt nor discouraged about it.
As he put it, “Ang Creamline naman, laging ang mindset niyan, bawi at maging competitive ulit sa ensayo para makabawi.”
Creamline through hot and cold
Jema Galanza, one of the team’s remaining pioneer players, saw the Cool Smashers go through all the highs and lows in her near-decade run.
Not once did she see Creamline battered bad in defeat. It always saw the lows as stepping stones to reach the highs again.
“Sa eight years ko sa team, kapag natatalo naman, hindi ko naman na-feel or hindi naman namin na-feel na bumababa ‘yung morale namin,” Galanza said.
“Sa haba na ng pinagdaanan ng Creamline, 'yung sa tuloy-tuloy na games tapos sa magkasunod na talo, nasasanay kami na kailangan namin mag-move on sa mga ganong klase ng game. Malaking bagay ‘yung experience namin for eight years na wala, kailangan na lang talaga naming bumawi next game.”
