UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas continued to impress as its young stars took over in beating NCAA defending champion College of St. Benilde, 25-20, 25-17, 25-27, 25-17, in the Shakey's V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Saturday.
Guest player Eya Laure led the way anew for UST with 18 markers, one point higher than her debut against San Beda.
Skipper Sisi Rondina made 15 points and Eya's elder sister EJ had 10, including the match-clinching service ace, for the Tigresses, who remained unscathed in two matches to top Group B.
"Medyo disappointing nga 'yung results kasi sila (college players) na dapat mag-step up kasi sila sila na din 'yung nandoon (leaders)," said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.
"'Yung pilit naming dinedevelop 'yung character, kung anong klaseng player ka ba during end game, catalyst ka ba o mang-iiwan ka sa ere, so those things na pinipilit namin baguhin na nakita namin medyo kulang, so that’s why ang paglalaro namin dun sa third na iyon," he added.
The Lady Blazers toughened up on defense, which is their strong point, (10-5) but the Tigresses took advantage of their opponent's reception with more service aces (14-7).
"Medyo maganda naman ang service namin, huwag lang pagusapan ang third set kasi nandun kami nag-error masyado," said Reyes.
Team captain Jeanette Panaga and guest player Janine Navarro each had 14 points for CSB, which dropped to 0-2.
