UNIVERSITY of the Philippines got back on the winning track, taking down Ateneo, 25-18, 14-25, 25-20, 25-18, on Saturday in the round-robin quarterfinals of the V-League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons, which lost their final match in the eliminations to Far Eastern University, started the quarterfinals with a big win to improve their record to 2-1.
Kathy Bersola had 12 points, Isa Molde scored 11 and Marian Buitre added 10 markers.
UP had a strong start but slipped in the second set, which didn't come as a surprise for coach Jerry Yee.
“Ayun ’yung customary down time namin eh,” said Yee. “So ’yan ’yung lagi naming sinasabi na hindi talaga tayo consistent. Di naman as if dina-down natin ang players or sinisisi pa natin sila nanalo na nga, hindi naman ganoon.”
“Sa paulit-ulit natin nagte-train from zero and up, na-experience natin ’yan sa mga bata na on their way up siguro talagang may mga inconsistencies so talagang growing pains ’yan eh,” he added.
“Buti nga ngayon one set na lang eh. Dati nakikita niyo two sets pa ’yan natatalo, magfa-five sets pa, o kaya matatalo ka pa so probably improvement na rin ’yan unti-unti i-iron out pa natin.”
Yee also stressed the Lady Maroons are far from where they need to be.
“I honestly say, no, kasi ’di ba? Ang finished product would be wala nang down time, tuluy-tuloy straight sets, laban kung laban na kapag UP ang kalaban talo ang kalaban, ’yun ang finished product,” he said. “So ngayon wala pa, malayo pa tayo. May improvements pero malayo pa tayo.”
Skipper Michelle Morente and Bea de Leon each had 15 points each for Ateneo, which fell to 1-2.
