TECHNOLOGICAL Institute of the Philippines exposed Ateneo's lack of depth with a 26-24,14-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12 victory in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena on Monday.
Guest player Mylene Paat finished with 14 points, for TIP, which bagged its first win for a share of lead in Group A with San Sebastian (1-0).
“Actually masaya naman kami doon sa panalo namin so nagpapasalamat din ako sa dalawa naming guest players, si Chie Saet at Mylene Paat,” said Lady Engineers coach Achilles Paril.
“Actually kailangan namin ‘yung dalawang guest player na iyon kasi marami kaming nawalang players. Actually six players ang nawala from the core ng team due to graduation,” he added.
Down by one, 10-11, in the deciding fifth set, TIP came charging back with four unanswered points then, after comebacking Michelle Morente saved one match point, sealed the win on Paat's crosscourt winner.
That completed a famous win for the Lady Engineers, who showed how vulnerable the two-time UAAP champions can be without Alyssa Valdez, Bea De Leon, and Jo Maraguinot.
Valdez is now part of the Ateneo coaching staff while Maraguinot and De Leon are out injured.
Ponggay Gaston made 17 points for Ateneo, while skipper Morente added 16, Kim Gequillana chipped in 13 and Ana Gopico contributed 10.
