FAR Eastern University sent Ateneo to a playoff match for the last semis spot after an easy, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22, win in the V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Wednesday.
Skipper Remy Palma and Toni Basas each had 13 markers, while Bernadeth Pons added 10 to help FEU snap a seven-game losing skid to Ateneo, including six games in the UAAP and one in the V-League, and improve to 4-1 record--nabbing the top spot in the semifinals in the process.
“Sobrang happy syempre, ang target namin pumasok talaga ng semis. Pero (hindi) ang mag-number one,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos.
“Hindi naman namin sinasabi na, ‘O, kailangan mag-number one tayo.’ Basta kailangan pumasok tayo and kailangan bago pumasok ang semis, high morale tayo. ‘Yung focus natin nandoon lahat, bigay natin ang 100 percent natin,” he added.
FEU closed the door on Ateneo with Basas and Jerilli Malaban manning the net with a combined eight of the team’s 14 blocks, while Maria Angelica Cayuna and Palma came up with seven of their nine service aces.
The Lady Eagles will face San Sebastian in a do-or-die match on Saturday and the winner will face FEU in a best-of-three semifinals.
“Wala naman kaming pinipiling kalaban, basta paghahandaan namin kung sino ang makakaharap namin,” said delos Santos.
Ana Gopico had nine points to lead Ateneo.
