CIGNAL denied Capital1’s repeat upset bid with a well-earned four-set win, 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-13, in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference on Saturday at the Philsports Arena.
MJ Perez turned out the lights on the Solar Spikers with 23 points on 20 attacks, one block, and two aces, as the HD Spikers retained solo lead in Pool B.
After surrendering a 10-2 run in the third frame, Perez & Co. fired back with authority to slam the door shut on what was shaping up to be a furious Capital1 fightback.
“Very thankful and proud sa team kasi kung anong naging game plan namin nu’ng two days sa training, lumabas naman siya. Medyo nag-struggle lang kami nung third set,” said Cignal head coach Shaq delos Santos.
“Good thing, naka-recover kami and knowing our team, kapag gusto nila talagang bumawi, gagawin nila lahat para makapanalo.”
Cignal fights off Capital1 fightback
With an HD Spikers sweep already on the table, Solar Spikers Russian reinforcement Marina Tushova, who had 28 markers, forged a late 8-2 counter-run to stretch the match to a fourth frame.
But another Cinderella run wasn’t to be as Jackie Acuña finished the job with a game-high six kill blocks to cap her 12-point performance, matching Capital1’s total output as a team.
Newly-named libero Judith Abil had 17 digs to complement Perez’ defensive double-double of 15 receptions and 12 digs for Cignal, as three-time PVL best setter Gel Cayuna also logged 16 excellent sets.
