DESPITE nursing an ankle injury, Charo Soriano provided quality minutes for PLDT Home Ultera in Game Two of the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference finals series.

Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago led the way in scoring as usual, but Soriano came up with huge points in crucial parts of the match that helped PLDT force a decider in the best-of-three with a four-set win over the Army.

The former Ateneo finished with eight points, a huge contribution after missing the series opener due to a Grade 2 high sprain in her right ankle she suffered during the semifinal round.

It was obvious that Soriano was still feeling pain in her right ankle during the match. She was taken out in the third set and asked the team’s physical therapist to put another layer of tape on the injured ankle.

But Soriano played on despite the risk that she may not able to play Game Three.

“It’s a game. It’s a championship. Any athlete will risk it. It’s a calculated risk,” Soriano said.

PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb said he decided not to risk Soriano in the opener so she could be healthy for the last two matches of the finals series.

“Sinakripisyo ko na. Ang katwiran ko, pipilitin mong maglaro ng Game One eh may chance pa naman kami. Kapag pinilit mo, baka lumala pa eh. Anong use,” said Gorayeb.

Soriano said PLDT physical therapist Raymond Pili made sure that she is ready to go in the days leading up to Game Two.

“’Yung PT namin, he’s been taking care of it the whole week… They are also trying to give me some medication and therapy. It’s very calculated,” said Soriano.

Of course, the adrenaline also helped.

“When you are there, the most helpful is the adrenaline and the will to win. You forget the pain temporarily when you play the game,” said Soriano.
