The Solar Spikers brightened up a dismal 0-3 start with their first win of the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18, over NXLED on Saturday at the Philsports Arena.
Heather Guino-o’s strong show of form continued with 21 points, seven digs and six receptions to lead the way in Capital1’s come-from-behind triumph.
Starting to find her groove on offense is rookie Leila Cruz with 17 markers, backed by veteran spiker Patty Orendain’s 10-piece and six receptions.
Even as Chiara Permentilla carried the Chameleons on her back with a game-high 23-point night, it still wasn’t enough to deliver an elusive victory for her squad.
No chances wasted
Capital1 proved that even a young team can exhibit fortitude with their backs against the wall.
Standing on the verge of an 0-2 set hole, Guino-o led an 11-1 run from 14-20 down to steal the second frame and take the driver’s seat from there onwards.
Just like her extended minutes as of late, the former Far Eastern University hotshot knew they had to make the most of every chance they could get even in the league’s longest conference.
“Ayoko lang po ulit sayangin ‘yung chance na binibigay ni coach and ng team po. Na-inspire rin po ako sa mga teammates ko kasi nakikita ko po kung gaano rin po sila nag-improve and naging matapang,” said Guino-o.
Head coach Roger Gorayeb furthered: “Minsan kasi makikita mo sa laro nila ingat na ingat sila [kaya] lagi ko siyang sinasabihan, ‘Heather ito na uli ‘yung chance mo, ‘wag mo nang sayangin’ kapag nilagay kita doon sa loob, bakbakan mo na. ‘Wag ka na magdalawang isip pa kung kaya mo o hindi, ‘yung confidence kasi lagi importante.
“Kapag ka takot ka, lahat ng gagawin mo alanganin, hindi talaga aggressive. Iniisip mo baka magkamali ka, eh binibigyan ko siya [ng chance].”
