KANNIKA Thipachot and Aiza Maizo came up with the important points as Cagayan Valley outlasted Philippine Army in a thrilling five-setter in the quarterfinals of the Shakey's V-League Season 10 Open Conference on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Rising Suns remained unbeaten in the tournament as they bagged their 11th win.
From a close 6-7 contest in the deciding set, the Lady Rising Suns went for a 9-2 run to seal the victory, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-9.
Thai reinforcement Thipachot came up with four hits, with Angge Tabaquero scoring on an off the block spike, as the Lady Rising Suns snatched the lead, 12-8.
Maizo shut the door on the Lady Troopers after a cross court shot, then blocked Bautista's attempt in a match that took almost two hours (1:53).
"Sinuswerte pa rin kami," said Cagayan coach Nes Pamilar. "Off kasi sina Angge at (Jheck) Dionela kaya nahirapan kami."
Thipachot had a game-high 24 points from 20 spikes, two blocks and two service aces, while Maizo had 17, including three back-to-back points in the fifth set that kept the game close. Tabaquero also
added 17 for Cagayan.
After a disappointing third set, Cagayan came up with a 6-0 spurt early in the fourth to snatch the lead and put up a 7-4 breather, but Army regained control, 12-10.
Cagayan took charge with an 11-point surge, while Army scored three points from the Lady Rising Suns' three errors, 21-15, to extend the match.
Rachel Anne Daquis finished with 20 points, while Jovelyn Gonzaga had 17 for the Lady Troopers, who now hold a 7-3 win-loss card.
