JUDY Ann Caballejo took charge for the Philippine Air Force as it overcame Meralco, 25-20, 12-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10, in the Shakey's V-League Season 10 Open Conference on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Former University of Santo Tomas skipper Caballejo poured in 26 points from 23 hits and three blocks to lift the Air Women to their fifth consecutive win.
"Surprising kasi first games namin down na down kami," said Air Force coach Clarence Esteban, referring to their 0-2 start to the conference.
Down by two sets, the Air Women came up with a 5-0 spurt to grab the upper hand, 19-17 in the fourth.
The Power Spikers answered with a 3-0 mini run to regain the lead, 20-19, but Caballejo sparked a 6-3 rally capped by a Maika Ortiz running spike to extend the match.
In the fifth and final set, the Air Women took control early, 10-5, after a 5-2 run.
Meralco, trimmed its deficit to 8-10, but the Air Women proved steadier down the stretch.
Joy Cases came up with 14 points, Ortiz chipped in 13 and Wendy Semana had 12 for Air Force, which finished the eliminations with a 5-2 card.
"'Yung UST girls kasi ’yung samahan nila, kilala na nila ang isa’t-isa so ’yung combination ng setting at spiking andoon na," Esteban said of Caballejo, Ortiz and setter Rhea Dimaculangan, who registered 43 excellent sets.
Chinese reinforcement Coco Wang produced 26 points from 23 spikes and three blocks, Fille Cainglet had 13, Maureen Penetrante-Ounano scored 12 and Maica Morada added 11 markers for Meralco.
The Power Spikers, who had earlier secured a quarterfinals spot, ended the eliminations with a 3-4 card.
