AN ankle injury suffered in warm-ups sidelined Far Eastern University's Bernadeth Pons in Game One of their Shakey's V-League Season 10 Collegiate Conference semifinal series against the Ateneo Lady Eagles, leaving her in tears.
Pons sustained an injury to her left ankle during the warm-up, leaving the Lady Tamaraws without their top player as Ateneo pulled off a three-set win to move within a win of an unlikely return to the finals.
“Meron biglang tumunog dun sa ankle, so hindi namin alam kasi nakatayo lang siya, biglang pumitik daw,” said FEU head coach Shaq Delos Santos. “Kanina, tapos na yung warm-up, magi-start na nga dun pa siya (na-injure) so hindi pa namin alam, bukas pa namin ipapacheck.”
“Kapag tumatalon lang naman pero yung side step, lakad wala naman," Delos Santos said, when asked about the level of pain Pons had to bear.
Pons was understandably frustrated.
"Siyempre frustrated ako. Pinaghandaan namin ito. Umiyak ako hindi dahil sa sakit, umiyak ako kasi hindi ako makakalaro. Hindi ako makatulong sa team ko,” she said.
However, Pons is still confident her team could bounce back on Wednesday even with her availability in doubt.
"Siguro kanina hindi lang talaga prepared na may kulang," the fourth-year open hitter said. "Wednesday if in case inadvice ng doctor na ipahinga muna siguro mas maka-adjust na sila kasi mas magiging prepared sila kasi mapag-ensayuhan muna."
