FAR Eastern University started its quarterfinal campaign on a high note, recovering from a loss in its final elimination match with a 25-21, 25-6, 25-17 win over College of St. Benilde on Sunday in the V-League Collegiate Conference Final Four at The Arena in San Juan.

Bernadeth Pons came up with 14 points on 10 attacks, two blocks and two service aces for FEU, which bounced back from a straight-sets loss to National University.

Guest players Honey Royse Tubino and Jovelyn Gonzaga scored nine and eight points, respectively, as the Lady Tamaraws improved their carryover quarterfinals record to 3-1.

Coach Shaq de los Santos was pleased to see the Lady Tamaraws score the huge win in 76 minutes.

“Honestly speaking, medyo mas na-challenge kami sa pagkatalo namin against NU and then mas naging constructive lahat para sa amin,” he said.

“Sabi ko nga sa mga bata after ng game namin sa NU, ’wala tayong dapat ikahiya, kasi lumaban tayo ng maayos. Hindi tayo nanalo pero yung standing natin nandoon pa rin. So mas paghandaan natin ang quarterfinals and yung NU kalimutan na natin yun,’” he added.

FEU allowed CSB only six points in the second frame, and looked set to replicate that when it took a 22-5 lead in the third but the Lady Tamaraws eased off the gas pedal and allowed the Lady Blazers to trim the gap.

It was a comfortable win for FEU, even as Tubino and Gonzaga did not start after missing practice due to a prior commitment with the Philippine Army.

“Galing sila sa Surigao and kagabi lang sila dumating. Kinausap ko sila na sige i-feel muna ulit ang kondisyon nila and sa adjustment sa team kaya ibinigay muna namin ang first six namin, yung mga collegiate, and after that saka ipinasok namin yung dalawa,” De los Santos said.

Jannine Navarro and Ranya Musa combined for a paltry 10 points for CSB, now on the brink of elimination with a 0-4 carryover slate.
