BANKO overcame BaliPure’s gallant fight powered by Grace Bombita’s 31-point eruption, escaping with a 19-25, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12 victory in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
The Perlas Spikers failed to close out the match in the fourth set as they missed the presence of skipper Nicole Tiamzon, who didn’t finished the match needing to leave to catch her flight to Korea for her participation in UNESCO.
BanKo trailed 8-11 in the fifth set but Sue Roces scored two of their 3-0 run to tie the frame before Bombita regained a 12-11 lead.
Back-to-back errors from Shirley Salamagos and Bombita handed a precarious 13-12 breather to BanKo before Dzi Gervacio nailed the back-to-back winning attacks for the team’s third straight victory.
Gervacio finished with 19 points on top of 14 excellent receptions as the Perlas Spikers improved to 5-2 win-loss record.
“Yung sa ganoong dikdikan na laban those who will make the errors ang matatalo. Ang sabi lang namin basta itaas lang namin ang bola tapos gagawan lang ng paraan,” said Gervacio. “Tapos coverage lang especially knowing na si Tiammy umalis siya in the middle of the game so we had to step up and step in to contribute what she gives.“
Kathy Bersola chipped in 15 points. Roces had nine markers, while Tiamzon had 13 markers and 12 digs before leaving. Jem Ferrer also paced BanKo with 28 excellent sets.
Bombita erupted with 27 kills, a pair of service aces and a block laced with 15 digs only for BaliPure’s 40 errors to detonate her performance, failing to complete the comeback.
Menchie Tubiera chimed in 18 points and 20 excellent receptions, while Salamagos added nine markers as the Water Defenders dropped to 2-4 record.
