DZI Gervacio, Kathy Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and Sue Roces helped BanKo hold off an Ateneo-Motolite comeback, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 19-25, 15-6, bringing the team closer to the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference Finals on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
The Perlas Spikers flirted with disaster after squandering a two-set lead against the Lady Eagles, but Gervacio, Bersola and Tiamzon scored four points each while skipper Roces added three to account for the team's 15 points in the fifth set.
Tiamzon showed the way for BanKo with game-high 25 points off 21 kills and four service aces, while Gervacio continued to be a thorn in the side of her alma mater hitting three of the last four points in the fifth and finished with 20 hits to go with 27 digs.
Bersola and Roces were also instrumental with 16 and 12 points, respectively, as well as setter Jem Ferrer, who made 39 excellent sets.
The Perlas Spikers try to reach the PVL Finals for the first time when they gun for a sweep against the Lady Eagles in Game 2 on Saturday, 2 p.m., at the same venue.
“(Sinabi ko lang sa fifth) they have to go back kung ano ang ginagawa nila sa first and second sets,” BanKo head coach Dong Dela Cruz said. “Siguro beterano ang mga ito kaya gusto nilang manalo kaya ganoon ang start nila (sa fifth set).”
BanKo continued to assert its mastery of Ateneo-Motolite, beating the team for the third time in as many matches.
Kat Tolentino picked up the cudgels for Ateneo-Motolite with 20 points to go with 16 digs. Ponggay Gaston and Maddie Madayag chipped in 14 and 12 hits, respectively, while rookie Vanie Gandler added 11 markers.
