ATENEO showed no sign of a championship hangover as it scored a 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24 victory over Adamson in the season opener of the 11th Shakey's V-League First Conference at a jampacked San Juan Arena on Sunday.
UAAP MVP Alyssa Valdez was brilliant the whole match as usual for the Lady Eagles and finished with 23 points, while Amy Ahomiro came up huge in the third set to deliver 16 points.
Michelle Morente added 14 markers for the Lady Eagles, back in action just a week after clinching for Ateneo its first ever UAAP volleyball crown.
With Ateneo down by five in the third set, 10-15, Ahomiro came up with four straight service aces to spark a 9-1 Lady Eagles for a 19-16 lead.
Adamson inched closer, 23-24, after a Pau Soriano kill but Ahomiro ended the set with a spike.
In the fourth and final set, the Lady Eagles broke loose from a 24-all contest as Morente and Ella de Jesus scored on back-to-back hits to seal the victory.
“Happy, happy,” Ateneo assistant coach Parley Tupaz quipped, mimicking head tactician Tai Bundit who is still in Thailand.
Guest player and former Lady Falcons team captain Soriano scored 19, while Thai reinforcement Pacharee Sangmuang chipped in 17 and Bhebs Pineda contributed 16.
