Ateneo first to PVL Open semifinals with rout of winless Adamson

The Lady Eagles first to reach PVL final four

ATENEO-Motolite secured the first semis berth in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference, defeating Adamson-Akari, 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20, on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Maddie Madayag finished with 15 points for the Lady Eagles, while Kat Tolentino chipped in 12 markers and rookie Vanessa Gandler had an all-around game of 12 points, 18 digs and 10 excellent receptions.

Coming from a straight-set loss to Perlas on Saturday, Ateneo-Motolite improved to 10-3.

“Well first when we joined this tournament we really didn’t expect anything, we just want to play,” said Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro.

“We don’t really expect na Final Four. Now (we’re here) at Final Four it’s really a bonus for us,” he added.

Playmaker Deanna Wong, who became a trending topic on social media after she was scolded by Almadro because of a miscue, registered all of the team’s 28 excellent sets in the match that took almost two hours to finish.

Bernadette Flora tallied 17 points, 20 digs and 11 excellent receptions for Adamson-Akari, while Chiara Permentilla added 12 markers.

The Lady Falcons remained winless in 10 outings.
