IT was the Ateneo Lady Eagles’ way of showing support to their big brothers.

Hours before their Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Open Conference game against Cagayan Valley, the Lady Eagles led by team captain Alyssa Valdez trooped to the press room of The Arena in San Juan to watch the live telecast of the UAAP game between Ateneo and University of the East.

The Lady Eagles cheered for every made shots and sighed over every missed opportunity, to the amusement of reporters watching the game with them.

The Blue Eagles rallied from a huge 21-point deficit to frustrate the Warriors in overtime, 93-91.

Asked what it’s like to be the one cheering and not playing, the 21-year old Valdez, whose steely nerves and great resolve powered Ateneo to its first ever women’s volleyball championship last year, said she’d rather not watch the game since she always gets nervous.

Still, she had to overcome the anxiety to show her support for their schoolmates, who also cheered them on when the Lady Eagles beat De La Salle in the volleyball finals last season.

“Ayaw ko manood kasi kinakabahan ako, pero siyempre support tayo sa kanila,” said the UAAP MVP.

“Pero kinakabahan talaga ako buti nanalo,” she added with a smile before leaving the press room as the Lady Eagles gear up for their game against the Lady Rising Suns.

The Lady Eagles later won their match against Cagayan Valley to improve their record to 3-5 and keep alive their bid for a semifinal spot.
