ATENEO tries to keep its semifinal hopes alive in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Open Conference when it goes up against top-ranked Philippine Army in Tuesday’s main game at The Arena in San Juan.
Game time is at 4p.m.
The Lady Eagles have so far strung up three straight wins in the quarterfinals to improve their record at 3-5 and remain very much in the race for a seat in the Final Four.
Coming from a four-set victory against Cagayan Valley on Sunday, 17-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19, the reigning UAAP champions will again rely on star player Alyssa Valdez, who came away with 24 points against the Lady Rising Suns.
That the Lady Eagles are currently on a winning streak is certainly not lost on Army, which became the first team to advance in the semis following its thrilling five-set win over National University, 22-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-14, 15-7.
“UAAP champion 'yan eh. Yung intensity na manalo andyan 'yan sa kanila, kaya sabi ko sa mga players ko 'wag natin silang i-smallin," said Lady Troopers mentor Rico de Guzman.
Jovelyn Gonzaga, Rachel Anne Daquis, Nene Bautista and Ginie Sabas, are expected to lead the way for the Lady Troopers, who carry a league-best 6-2 card.
Meanwhile, Cagayan is looking to bounce back from its loss against Ateneo as it squares off with also-ran National University at 2 p.m.
The Lady Rising Suns will lean on former University of Santo Tomas standout Aiza Maizo, who poured in 20 points in a losing effort against the Lady Eagles.
Cagayan is currently running at the fourth spot with a 4-3 slate.
