PHILIPPINE Army kept alive its bid for twin titles, advancing to the V-League Open finals with a quick three-set win over Philippine Air Force on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Troopers, eyeing the V-League crown after claiming the Super Liga All Filipino Conference crown last month, stopped the Air Women, 25-11, 25-20, 25-22, to sweep the best-of-three semifinals. Army beat Air Force in four sets on Thursday.
Army will take on defending champion Cagayan Valley, which also scored a semis sweep against PLDT.
Reigning MVP Jovelyn Gonzaga led all scorers with 13 points, while Ging Balse added 12, Rachel Anne Daquis chipped in 11 and Nene Bautista delivered 10 for the Lady Troopers.
The win also put Army closer to a second V-league title after topping the 2011 Open Conference.
“Gusto ko lang ulit makabalik ang Army sa hanay ng mga champion dito sa V-League,” said Army coach Rico de Guzman. “Pipilitin namin mag-champion para sa karangalan ng Army.”
The best-of-three Finals series will start on Thursday at 4 p.m. after the presentation of individual awards.
Army, which needed an hour and 22 minutes to finish the match, had 16 service aces.
Maika Ortiz finished with nine points for the Air Women, who will meet PLDT Home Telpad in the best-of-three series for third place.
