PHILIPPINE Army recovered from a set down to beat Meralco, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, on Sunday and record its first back-to-back wins in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Rachel Anne Daquis and Dindin Santiago-Manabat, again playing consecutive days, led the attack as the Lady Troopers completed the win in almost two hours to finish.
Daquis scored 16 points and Santiago-Manabat added 13 for Army, which bounced back after a straight-sets loss to unbeaten PLDT last week.
Last year’s All Filipino conference champion, Army now holds a 3-1 win-loss record to move to second spot, while Meralco slipped to joint third with Cagayan Valley at 2-1.
Still, Army coach Rico de Guzman remains dissatisfied, saying has yet to see his exact plays run by his wards because he has never seen his full lineup at practice.
"Kahit panalo kami nakukulangan pa rin ako,” said de Guzman. “Ang depensa at opensa namin kulang pa gusto ko makuha nila ang mga plays na gusto ko. Kailangan ko makuha ang gusto kong transition play.”
Five of the 14 players in the Army lineup are civilian — Santiago-Manabat, Daquis, Mina Aganon, Honey Tubino and libero Tin Agno.
“’Yun ang problema, hindi kami makumpleto sa practice,” said de Guzman. “Sabi ko nga sa mga civilian kung may free time kayo at may practice (ang Army) pumunta rin kayo.”
Aby Marano and skipper Paneng Mercado each had 12 points for Meralco.
