DEFENDING champion Philippine Army got back on the winning track as it downed Philippine Navy, 25-19, 25-12, 25-15, on Tuesday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Former MVP Mary Jean Balse led all scorers with 13 points as the Lady Troopers bounced back from a straight-sets loss to PLDT.
Skipper Tina Salak added seven points, Joanne Bunag chipped in with seven markers and former MVP Nene Bautista contributed six points for Army, which took the win in an hour and 15 minutes.
Army improved its win-loss record to 2-1, although coach Rico de Guzman was not pleased with the Lady Troopers’ performance.
“Sabi ko sa kanila ’wag na sabayan ang Navy,” he said. “Hindi naman sa pagmamalaki, hindi ganoon kalaas ang Navy, ’wag tayo sumabay. Ang nagyayari naghihintay na lang tayo ng error natin pwede naman iwanan na natin sila.”
It was the fourth match in four days for guest players Dindin Santiago-Manabat and Mina Aganon and Army mainstay Rachel Anne Daquis — the three also play for Petron in Philippine Super Liga — and were given limited minutes.
“Ito na ang pinaka practice namin, sa third set ko na pinasok si Dindin at si Rachel kasi galing pa sila sa game kahapon, pagod na sila,” said De Guzman.

Hard-hitting Jovelyn Gonzaga has yet to see action in the tournament due to a sprained right ankle but De Guzman said she is ready to play.
“Pinarerecover ko muna (si Jov), ayaw ko muna gamitin pero actually pwede na siya maglaro,” he said.
Former Perpetual Help spiker Norie Jane Diaz scored nine points for Philippine Navy, which dropped to 1-2.
The Lady Altas absorbed their second consecutive loss after winning their opening match against Philippine Coast Guard.
