THE PHILIPPINE women’s volleyball team formally returns to Southeast Asian Games play on June 10 when they face Indonesia at the OCBC Arena Hall 2 in Singapore.

The Alyssa Valdez-led squad opens its campaign in Group B against Indonesia before taking on Malaysia on June 11 and Vietnam on June 12.

Valdez is the country’s flag-bearer in the opening ceremonies of the SEA Games on June 5. The Philippines will likely send the core of the squad seeing action in the Asian Under-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship.

The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals set on June 14, with the gold medal match set on June 15.

The Philippines is in Group B with powerhouse Thailand, Singapore, and Myanmar in Group A.

The Pinay spikers will be playing in the SEA Games for the first time in 10 years, since bagging bronze in Bacolod in 2005.

Thailand, the only other Southeast Asian country competing in the Asian Under-23 event, is the top favorite for the SEA Games women’s volleyball gold. The Thais beat Korea on the way to the quarterfinals of the Asian Under-23 tournament.
