ALYSSA Valdez absorbed a rare loss in a local tournament after PLDT Home Ultera was denied by defending champion Philippine Army in Game One of the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference Finals.

The Ultra Fast Hitters' 13-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-22 loss to the Lady Troopers snapped run of 10 wins through the eliminations and semifinals, leaving them in a must-win situation in Sunday’s Game Two.

For Valdez, it was her first loss in a local meet after a long while after the two-time UAAP MVP steered Ateneo to a sweep of Season 77 for a second successive collegiate title, capped by a 2-0 sweep of La Salle in the finals.

But the pride of San Juan, Batangas, was gracious in defeat.

“Paminsan-minsan kailangan rin maka-experience ng talo,” Valdez told Spin.ph.

“Hindi naman lahat ng talo masama,” she added. “It’s something na magtuturo sa ‘yo na meron ka pang kailangan i-improve, may kailangan ka pang matutunan.”

Despite being considered as the face of Philippine volleyball today, Valdez was humble enough to admit she still needs to work on her game.

She added the Ultera Fast Hitters also didn’t display a winning attitude and failed to communicate during the match.

“We really learn a lot sa mga pagkatalo ‘di ba? And siguro it’s a wake-up call for us and for me to improve my game pa. There’s room for improvement pa talaga,” she said.

“For me siguro compared to the previous games ‘yung enjoyment sa laro medyo kulang and communication, team work. Definitely ang team naman will lose if walang team work talaga,” she added.

Valdez remained positive PLDT can bounce back from its loss as she looks forward to the next game against Army on Sunday.
