ATENEO star Alyssa Valdez offered the Game One win of the Lady Eagles in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Collegiate Conference final to coach Tai Bundit and his assistant Parley Tupaz.
In the absence of Bundit, who is on a two-week break to attend a coaching course in Thailand, Tupaz handled the team, which easily disposed National University, 25-19, 25-13, 25-21, to move a step closer of winning the championship Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
“It’s for our coaches na lang rin with coach Tai being not here kasi nagku-coaching course siya, and coach Parley, who’s he’s really working hard to maintain the condition and ‘yung mga pinapagawa ni coach Tai for us,” said Valdez.
The UAAP back-to-back champion needed only an hour and 18 minutes to turn back the Lady Bulldogs.
NU tried to make a fight out of it when it led, 20-18, in the third set, only for the Katipunan-based team to rally back and score four straight points to seal the win.
“Siguro for the past weeks maraming nagkakasakit and all the efforts of our teammates naman laging nandoon,” said Valdez. “We really worked and played for the team, the coaches and those supporting us.”
Game Two is of the best-of-three series is set on Sunday.
