PHILIPPINE Air Force got some sort of revenge against archrival Philippine Army with a 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 win on Tuesday in the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
The Air Women have endured a string of setbacks to the Lady Troopers from last year's Open Conference where they faced off for the bronze medal to the recently concluded Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference where Air Force bowed to Army in the title match.
Even in the AFP Olympics, it was Army that reigned supreme with Air Force settling for silver.
"Finally nanalo na kami (sa Army)," said Air Force coach Clarence Esteban.
Joy Cases scored 20 points, Judy Ann Caballejo had 18 and Maika Ortiz added 14 for the Air Women, who improved to the third spot with a 4-3 win-loss card, next to top-ranked Cagayan (4-1) and the Army (4-2).
Army played below par, and its attack diminished with Rachel Anne Daquis sidelined due to a sprained left knee.
:Hindi gaanong maganda ang laro nila (Army), mabigat ang galaw nila tapos wala pa si Daquis kaya ang palo nila medyo nabawasan, kaya ang sabi ko sa mga player ko samantalahin na natin," said Esteban.
The Air Force mentor also noted that they were better on the defensive end especially in the setting department, where Rhea Dimaculangan had more successful sets than the Army’s star setter Tina Salak (57-49).
"Maganda ang depensa namin lalo na si Rhea, maganda ang laro niya," he said.
"Maganda ang mga bigay niya kaya ang movement ng spikers maganda at hindi nakaka-establish ang blockers ng Army," he added.
Jovelyn Gonzaga had 14 points for the Lady Troopers, Salak came up with 13, Joanne Bunag scored 12, and Nene Bautista added 10.
