WILMA Salas took matters into her own hands as Petro Gazz held off a hard-fighting BanKo side for its sixth straight victory in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference.
The Cuban import continued her stellar play in the league as she put up a career- and season-best 37 points in the 25-23, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20 victory over BanKo on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Salas provided 35 kills of her team’s total 70 attacks and two blocks, helping the unbeaten side secure at least a playoff for a semifinal berth.
“Every time I play I always try my best," said the super import. “It’s super good for me. Every time I work I want to [be] better.”
Salas' output was the second most points in a single PVL game behind the record set by Kia Bright, who tallied 41 points in a five-set loss to PayMaya in Game 3 of their semifinal series last July 6, 2018.
Bright, incidentally, was played sparingly by Perlas coach Apichat Kongsawat, but the locals put up a gallant stand and ended Petro Gazz’s run of 17 straight sets won in the third frame.
That was the time the 28-year-old Cuban asked playmaker Djanel Cheng for the ball.
“Every time I asked the setter, ‘I need the ball. Give me the ball.’ The setter has confidence in me,” Salas said.
Salas has been been nothing short of dominant with a 23.1-point average in their perfect 6-0 win-loss run.The 37 also eclipsed the high of 35 points she set during a stint in the Turkish league.
But the 6-foot-2 wing spiker said her best is yet to come.
“I’ll go for more. That’s for sure,” Salas said.
