ADAMSON finally broke the spell of its three-game skid as it took down University of the Philippines, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, to secure at least a playoff for a semifinals ticket in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference on Wednesday night at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Falcons, who had fallen down hard with three straight losses after soaring high by winning their first four games, made sure to bounce back in their must-win game against the Maroons who they dispatched in 77 minutes of action.

Leo Miranda topped the scoring with 17 points and provided the much-needed defense of his team 13 digs and as many as receptions. Paolo Pablico and Mark Alvarez contributed 15 hits apiece, while playmaker Leonard Amburgo made 21 excellent sets.

But for Adamson assistant coach Daniel Miranda, the biggest factor was spiker-turned-libero Kapen Pinar, who protected the floor with 12 excellent receptions out of 23 attempts and was 10-of-22 in digs.

“Honestly, nagkaproblema kami sa libero, ‘yung libero talaga so malaking adjustment ‘yung ginawa. ‘Yung suggestion na ginawa ko magpalit ng libero na ngayon ‘yung spiker namin si Kapen is libero siya ngayon kahit papaano nakakita kami ng improvement from the past,” said Miranda on Pinar who exchanged position with John Philipp Nuguid.

Miranda, speaking for head coach Domingo Custodio, was pleased by how his wards stepped up when it mattered most, rising back to third place with an improved 5-3 win-loss record in a tie with earlier winner College of Saint Benilde, which Adamson battles for the third semis berth on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“Pinarealize muna namin sa mga bata ‘yung mga kakulangan nila kung ano ‘yung mga binitawan nilang bagay na nagpapanalo sa team nila. Number one ‘yung receive namin ‘yun ‘yung binitawan nila eh,” he said.

“Pangalawa sabi ko sa kanila, kailangan magkaroon sila ng pride kasi UAAP school eh puro UAAP schools ang dumali sa amin. So this time, importante ‘yung laro kailangan namin ng panalo para din naman sa University rin at makita namin ‘yung kakayanan ng mga bata," he added.

John Mark Millette and Matthew Gohoc has 14 points each for UP, while Nicolo Consuela added 10 as the Maroons fell on the brink of elimination with a 4-4 card tied with FEU at fifth place.

UP and FEU clash for survival on Sunday at 11 a.m. with the winner facing the loser of the Adamson-St. Benilde clash in a playoff for the last berth on Wednesday.
