PLDT MyDSL bucked a sluggish start to pull the rug from under fancied PCSO-Bingo Milyonaryo, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20, Sunday in the Philippine Super Liga at the Philsports Arena.
Former Adamson team captain Pau Soriano came away with 16 points, while Far Eastern University alumna Rosemarie Vargas also had the same markers in the rousing first win for the Speed Boosters.
They now join Cignal in the early lead as the HD Spikers earlier won over another favored squad Petron, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23.
After losing the opening set, the Speed Boosters took control in the middle sets, before completing their fightback from a 0-6 deficit in the final frame for the win.
“Buti na lang sa last set nag-karoon ng spark,” said PLDT MyDSL coach Francis Vicente. “Nilabas ko muna si Lou Ann (Latigay) kasi masakit 'yung balikat. Kaya ginawa kong utility si Gela (Benting) kahit na opener siya,”
“Actually that was a gamble,” admitted Vicente.
The Speed Boosters also trailed early in the third, 0-4, but likewise found the will to rally and take a 23-15 en route to claiming the set.
“Ang sabi ko kasi sa kanila (players) hindi pa tapos ang game, the game ends at 25. Kahit 10-0 pa 'yan as long as you keep on defending the ball kaya yan,” said Vicente.
Although the Puffins had slightly more blocks than the Speed Boosters (8-7), PLDT MyDSL aced more service attempts (7-2).
Iris Patrona led PCSO-Bingo Milyonaryo with 14 points, all from spikes, in a losing effort for the Puffins, who were earlier tagged as among the favorites for the title.
