TAKING the cue from the successful UAAP volleyball tournament, Shakey's V-League officials are planning to hold the semifinals and finals of the Season 10 First Conference in a much-bigger venue.
All the V-League elimination-round games starting with the openers on Sunday will be held at The Arena in San Juan, but Ricky Palou said plans are already in place to stage the playoffs either at the Smart Araneta Coliseum or the Mall of Asia Arena, or both.
“As for the venue of the games of the semifinals and the finals, we are planning to hold the games at MOA and/or Araneta,” said Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision Management Inc.
The shift to a bigger venue proved a success for the UAAP, whose playoff games as well as the final elimination-round match between rivals De La Salle and Ateneo attracted record crowds both at the MOA Arena in Pasay and the Big Dome in Quezon City.
De La Salle's sweep of Ateneo in the best-of-three Finals drew crowds that rivalled those seen in the league's basketball matches.
The V-League's inaugural conference drew 10 teams including the widely popular Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas teams.
The 10 teams will be divided into two groups for the single-round eliminations, with the top eight advancing to the quarterfinals which will be another single-round affair except that teams from the same elims bracket will no longer be facing each other.
The top four teams move to a pair of best-of-three semifinal series to determine the two protagonists in the finals, which will also be a best-of-three affair.
