PHILAB used a three-run assault in the sixth inning to beat hard-fighting Philippine Air Force, 3-0, on the second day of the Philippine National Games baseball competitions at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
In a battle between teams reinforced with national players, Philab emerged victorious, with Joennard Pareja capping off the sixth-inning run with an RBI single off pitcher Ernesto Binarao.
With the win, Philab advanced to the next round of the 14-team, double elimination format tournament.
Air Force lefty pitcher Jonjon Robles silenced Philab in the first four innings, but his teammates could not get the job done on offense.
Hard-throwing Charlie Labrador had a complete shutout for Philab allowing only three hits in the game.
Fongs Rances and Francis Candela singled and doubled to start the sixth before they reached home on an error and a fielder’s choice. Joseph Orillana scored on that Pareja single.
Meanwhile, the Philippine youth team blanked Adamson, 7-0, in the other game on Saturday.
Dio Remollo’s two-run double led to a three-run first inning for the youth squad. Franco Hashimoto also doubled home two runs in the sixth frame.
