THE main bulk of the Philippine national women’s volleyball team left for Thailand on Friday for the AVC Asian Cup set from September 16-23.
Team captain Aby Maraño, Mylene Paat, Cha Cruz-Behag, Maika Ortiz, Mika Reyes, Grethcel Soltones, Risa Sato, Jasmine Nabor, Denden Lazaro and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas make up the final batch bound for Thailand.
They join Alyssa Valdez, Jia Morado, Jema Galanza and Melissa Gohing, who are already in Thailand for their training camp with PVL club team Creamline.
After a stint in the Asian Games in Jakarta, the nationals’ mettle will once again be tested in pool games against Kazakhstan, Iran and Australia.
The nationals begin their game against Australia on Sunday.
“Very strong teams entered in this tournament, top teams in Asia, almost the same cast as the Asian Games,” said Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. president Peter Cayco.
“This will be a good chance for the Philippine team to continue to hone their skills,” he added.
The Philippines qualified for the tournament after finishing eighth in the AVS Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship held in Laguna last year.
