AIZA Maizo and Fille Cainglet played big as Petron came back from a set down to beat PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo on Sunday for its second win in the Philippine Super Liga at the PhilSports Arena.
The Blaze Spikers shook off a sluggish start and overcame PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-16, with the former college rivals leading the way.
Maizo and Cainglet poured in eight and six points, respectively, in the third set and seven and four each in the fourth set to help Petron even its win-loss record at 2-2.
Petron coach Vilet Ponce de Leon was pleased to see the Blaze Spikers bounce back after a straight-sets loss on Friday to the Army. Maizo struggled a bit in that game, while Cainglet had seen little action in the previous matches but both came up huge for Petron this time.
"'Yun naman talaga ang ine-expect namin from this team, kung hindi magwork out 'yung isa, 'yung isa mag step up na," said Ponce de Leon.
Former University of Santo Tomas team captain Maizo and ex-Ateneo star Cainglet finished with 18 points apiece.
From a tied 21-21 game in the third set, Petron went on a 4-1 mini run to end the frame.
The Blaze Spikers took charge early in the fourth and final set to put up a 7-1 advantage.
The Puffins capitalized on Petron's three errors to inch closer, 8-12, but the Blaze Spikers went on a 7-5 run and held on to secure the win.
"Nagte-train kasi ako talaga kasi I want to help my team," said the 23-year-old Cainglet. "Siguro kailangan ko lang i-bring out 'yung laro ko."
Maizo's college teammates Angge Tabaquero and Maika Ortiz chipped in 11 markers each for the Blaze Spikers.
Stephanie Mercado had 11 points for PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo, which dropped to 1-3.
