    Perpetual completes finals comeback against Arellano to bag 11th NCAA volleyball title

    UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help copped its 11th title in the NCAA men’s volleyball tournament, beating Arellano University, 23-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-23, in the decider of the best-of-three of the finals in Season 93 on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.

    Rookie-MVP Joebert Almodiel led UPH with 19 points and 14 excellent receptions, while skipper Rey Taneo, who was eventuanly named Finals MVP, had 11 points in his last game in the NCAA. Ronniel Rosales had 10 markers.

    “It's great, sobrang saya,” said UPH coach Sammy Acaylar, who handled UPH in all of its 11 titles. “(Pero) hindi ko binibilang ang championship ko kundi ang tulong na binibigay ko sa mga manlalaro ko na nakatikim sila ng championship.”

    The Altas erased a seven-point deficit in the fourth set, taking the lead, 22-21.

    John Patrick Ramos sealed the win with an emphatic spike.

    “Name-maintain ko ‘yung composure ko para hindi ma-reflect sa mga bata ‘yung pressure and stress na nasa akin,” said Acaylar.

    “Sabi ko they have to play, they have to trust everybody. Nagtitiwala ako sa lahat ng players ko. Bawat isa sa kanila, nagbibigay ng puntos yan, and bawat isa diyan ay lucky charm,” he added.

    Perpetual Help swept the nine-game elimination round only to lose in the series opener, 25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 24-26, 9-15.

    The Altas recovered in Game Two with a four-set win, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16.

    Rosales, Almodiel, Taneo and John Ramos came up with solid plays as graduating setter Warren Catipay had to watch from the bench after he injured his right foot late in the first set.

    Christian dela Paz finished with 16 points for AU, while Demy Lapuz added 12.
