DASMARINAS, Cavite -- The La Salle-Dasmarinas Patriots showed enough spunk and composure in the final set to turn back the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder, 25-23, 26-28, 25-19, 25-18, and regain the men’s volleyball crown of the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) at the DLSU Health Science Institute campus here.
The Patriots banked on the presence of Most Valuable Player Al-Nakran Abdillah and Hudri Kona during a crucial stretch to help the Patriots complete a 2-0 sweep of the best-of-three title series.
Abdilla’s kill and service winner shattered a 13-all deadlock in the fourth set and his crucial plays allowed the Patriots to move away at 18-13 with a 5-0 scoring binge.
A couple of smashes at the net by Kona set off a 4-1 spurt and the Patriots were never in trouble again as they established a 22-14 edge in this spikefest supported by Mikasa and Molten Balls.
“Noong una, na-rattle sila (Patriots) sa receiving errors nila. Pero sa huli, na-control na nila ang kanilang spiking,” said Patriots' long-time coach Fidel Rojales.
La Salle-Dasma's two-game sweep of RTU allowed the school to emerge as double titleholders again this year in volleyball.
The DLSU-Dasmarinas Lady Patriots emerged as back-to-back women’s champions earlier in the day after pulling off a 25-19, 25-9, 25-23 triumph in Game 2 of their best-of-three title series with the Philippine School of Business Administration Lady Jaguars.
The dethroned champions in the men's side, the Philippine Merchant Marine School Mariners, settled for third place following a 26-24, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17 win over the Olivarez College Sea Lions.
