NATIONAL University remained in contention for a semifinals berth in the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament after drubbing Far Eastern University in straight sets, 25-19, 25-12, 25-18, at The Arena in San Juan Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs took control right from the get-go, and didn’t really met resistance from the Lady Tams until the third set when the Morayta-based team suddenly grabbed the upperhand at 17-16.
But the host school was not to be denied, coming through with a 9-1 shortly after to clinch the win.
“Inisip namin na hindi naman ganoon ka-eager ang FEU," admitted senior spiker Cai Nepomuceno. "Pero para sa amin big game ito kaya pinush talaga namin."
Now NU (8-6) awaits the outcome of the crucial match between University of Santo Tomas (8-5) and Ateneo (9-4) Sunday, but will obviously root for a win by the Lady Eagles.
A victory by the Tigresses will eliminate the Lady Bulldogs outright, but a UST loss meant arranging a playoff with NU for the last berth in the Final Four.
If necessary, the do-or-die game is set Wednesday.
The Lady Bulldogs, who capitalized on the Lady Tams’ 23 errors, came up with 11 blocks against four by FEU, and scored four service aces, all from Santiago.
Wenneth Eulalio finished with seven points from five spikes and two blocks, while Mary Palma also had seven, also from five attacks and two blocks for the Lady Tams.
FEU ended the season with a 6-8 win-loss card after
winning five straight games under returning coach Kid Santos.
In the first game earlier, reigning back-to-back champion De La Salle University notched its 13th consecutive win as it downed University of the East, 25-11 25-13 25-15.
Ara Galang came through with 16 points from 14 spikes and two blocks, Abigail Maraño added 11, from six hits, three blocks and two service aces, and Mika Reyes also had 11 from six spikes and five service aces.
Shiesa Nebrida made 10 markers, all from spikes, for the Lady
Warriors, who finished their season winless in 13 outings.
