NATIONAL University remained unbeaten, outlasting defending champion La Salle, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Jaja Santiago and Aiko Urdas combined for the final push as the Lady Bulldogs extended their winning run to four dealing the Lady Spikers their first loss in four games.
Santiago poured in 27 points from 20 kills, four blocks and three service aces, while Risa Sato added 15.
Urdas and Audrey Paran each had 10 markers for NU.
“Tama naman ’yung in-anticipate namin, malakas kasi ang sistema nila. I’m happy they were able to overcome it,” said NU coach Babes Castillo.
NU erased a four-point deficit in the fifth set, 8-12, to tie the contest, 12-12, before Santiago pushed the Lady Bulldogs at match point, 14-13.
Kim Dy saved the match point, 14-14, but Santiago scored on another powerful spike for the second match point, 15-14, before Aiko Urdas’ service ace ended the thrilling match.
“We will cherish our win today, we will rest tomorrow then regroup kami on Tuesday and tabaho ulit,” said Castillo.
Skipper Majoy Baron led La Salle with 14 points, May Luna had 12 and Dy added 11.
