NATIONAL University bounced back with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 victory over University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Jaja Santiago scored 17 points, while Risa Sato added 10 markers for NU in the one-hour and 19-minute match.
The Lady Bulldogs, coming off a loss to the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, scored their sixth win in seven matches to end the first round of eliminations on top of the standings.
“To begin with, after we lost, move on right away ang aming attitude. And the way we approached this game sa UP, before we even started our training, it has to be a statement game,” said NU coach Babes Castillo.
“Because it's the end of the season eh, so sabi ko sa kanila, pinaka-importante sa any journey is the beginning and in the end. So sabi ko, this is very important,” he added.
NU recorded its best start in four years with a 6-1 win-loss card. The Lady Bulldogs last had a 6-1 start Season 76.
But Castillo reminded his wards to remain hungry and not to be complacent.
“Today we'll celebrate kasi first time na nag-rank 1 tayo, we're celebrating. But hindi pa kami happy,” he said. “Hindi pa kami ganoon ka-happy the way we played. Marami pang pwede tayong ma-produce, magawa.”
Diana Carlos scored 15, while Isa Molde added 11 as UP slid to 2-5, tied for sixth with University of Sto. Tomas.
