NATIONAL University recovered from two sets down to beat three-time defending girls champion La Salle-Zobel to complete a first round sweep in the UAAP Season 76 high school volleyball tournament recently at the UE Caloocan gym.
The Lady Bullpups, now without 6-foot-4 Jaja Santiago who has moved to the college team, scored a 15-25, 23-25, 25-8, 25-22, 15-10 win, their fifth in as many matches.
University of Santo Tomas finished second in the first round with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-14 triumph over tournament newcomer Adamson.
The Junior Tigresses tote a 4-1 record, while La Salle’s Junior Lady Spikers are third with a 3-2 slate.
The NU boys squad also completed a sweep of its five matches, downing reigning nine-time champion University of the East, 12-25, 25-21, 26-24, 26-24.
The winningest boys squad with 12 titles, the Junior Warriors hold a 4-1 slate.
Ateneo, meanwhile, downed La Salle-Zobel, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22, for its third win in five outings and hold third spot.
Second-round action begins on January 11.
