BACK-to-back champion De La Salle rolled to its ninth consecutive win as it bested Adamson, 25-19, 25-20, 25-8, in the 75th UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Wednesday.
Coming from a tight first two sets, the Lady Archers dominated the third set with a 13-2 run during one stretch to finish the match in straight sets and move a win away from making the semifinal round.
Ara Galang, who clinched match point with a block, registered a game-high 16 points, while captain Abigail Maraño added 14 (on eight spikes, five blocks, and one service ace) and Mika Reyes 11 (from six spikes and five blocks) for DLSU, which now has a 9-1 win-loss card.
"Sabi ko lang sa kanila kailangan lumayo at wag magtapon ng score," said De La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus. "At maging aggressive sa block."
De Jesus, however, said his Lady Archers, who had more spikes (34-24), blocks (17-3), and aces (6-2) against Adamson, still have to lessen their turnovers.
"Hindi nagkasabay-sabay lahat, yung service errors andoon pa. So yun ang kailangan bigyan ng importansiya," said De Jesus, whose team committed 10 errors.
Pau Soriano and Shiela Pineda could only come up with eight markers apiece for the Lady Falcons, whose four-game winning run was snapped.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas downed University of the East, 25-14, 25-16, 25-23, to tie Adamson and Far Eastern University in third place with a 6-4 slate.
Sophomore Carmela Tunay led the Golden Tigresses with 11 points, from eight spikes, two blocks and one service ace, while veteran Maika Ortiz had 10, from eight hits and two blocks.
"More on motivation na lang," said UST coach Odjie Mamon. "Too late na mag-change ng system. Basta paulit-ulit ko na lang sila nire-remind ng roles nila."
Sarina Bulan came away with a game-high 13 markers, while Ma. Leuseht Dawis chipped in 10, from eight hits and two blocks, in a losing effort for UE, which remained winless in 10 games this season.
