UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas secured at least a playoff for a place in the stepladder semifinals with a 25-10, 25-22, 25-11 win over University of the East on Saturday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Tigresses scored their sixth win in 14 matches to move to fourth spot, where they will be joined by the winner of the final elimination-round match between Adamson and FEU. Still in contention is University of the Philippines, which also holds a 5-8 record and will face Naitonal University in its final elimination-round match.

Ateneo booked an outright spot in the finals with a 14-match sweep of the eliminations. Second-seeded La Salle (12-2) and National U (7-6) wait for the winner of the playoff for No. 4 before the stepladder semifinals start.

“We are trying to get to the semifinals the hard way na,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon. “Imbes na outright semis we have to play sa playoff pa and I think on Wednesday na ang playoff.”

Another stepladder playoff will be held in case of a three-way tie. The two teams with the lower quotients will face in a playoff and the winner in that match will square off with the team with the highest quotient.

“Wala akong preference kahit sino sa kanila,” said Mamon. “Basta buhay pa kami ngayon, habang may buhay mag pag-asa.”

Rookie EJ Laure scored 11 points for UST, skipper Pam Lastimosa finished with 10 markers and Ria Meneses added nine.

For UE, it was another winless season. Team captain Shaya Adorador registered nine points, while Leuseht Dawis, who played her final game in the UAAP, had five markers.
