UNIVERSITY of the Philippines defeated Ateneo, 28-26, 25-23, 26-24, on Saturday at the MOA Arena to stay in the Final Four race in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament.

Tots Carlos led the way for UP with 22 points and eight digs, while Isa Molde added 13 as the Lady Maroons scored their fifth win in 13 outings to move to sixth spot.

UP also kept the Lady Eagles from securing a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.

Kat Tolentino scored 15 for Ateneo, which remains in second spot at 9-4, behind La Salle at 9-2.

Far Eastern University is a close third at 8-4, and still has a chance to take the twice-to-beat advantage.

“Finish strong. That’s what we came to do and that’s what we did,” said UP coach Godfrey Okumu.

NU is still in fourth at 6-6, followed by Adamson at 5-7 ahead of UP.

“Kasama sa finish strong ‘yung confidence, ‘yung pag push sa sarili, pag push sa teamate. Pinanghahawakan lang talaga namin ‘yung motto ni coach na finish strong,” said Carlos.

“Lagi kami nireremind sa amin ni coach na hindi ibibigay ‘yung panalo sa amin na ganoon kadali. Like, panalo kayo. No, kailangan namin mag-workhard,” she added.

The Lady Maroons’ last win over the Lady Eagles was in Season 78 against a team led by Alyssa Valdez.
