UP Lady Maroons aware that with impressive start comes heightened expectations

FOR the first time in a long while, University of the Philippines is on top of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament standings - something that makes graduating spiker Nicole Tiamzon nervous.

Finally showing signs of life after years of frustration, the Lady Maroons currently holds a perfect 4-0 win-loss record after disposing of Adamson, University of the East, defending champion La Salle and its latest victim University of Santo Tomas.

Sunday's win over the Lady Tigers, coupled with La Salle's win over National University later in the day, leave UP as the solo leader and only unbeaten team this season.

While the UP community is on a high, Tiamzon is in no mood to celebrate.

“Kinakabahan (ako) kasi pataas nang pataas ang expectation to perform (well),” said the fifth-year outside hitter, aware that the pressure piles up as the wins come in.

“Syempre kasama ang pressure talaga and kailangan talaga namin ma-push ang sarili namin,” she said.

Tiamzon, whose first three years with UP were a struggle before they finally made it to the Final Four in Season 78, warned that this is not the time for the Lady Maroons to put their guard down.

The Lady Maroons dropped its first set of the season against UST, 25-22, 25-22, 29-31, 25-19, and Tiamzon warned the repercussions may be dire the next time they lower their guard.

“Pag nag-relax kami pwede rin kaming matalo, pwedeng masira ang kumpyansa namin, so wala kaming time mag-relax talaga,” she said.

“(I tell my teammates) ‘wag magpapadala sa nangyayari, meaning mag-focus kami sa team namin mismo, tuluy-tuloy lang kung ano ang ginagawa namin,” she added.

UP faces another daunting test next Sunday when they go up against Ateneo.
