UP Lady Maroons overcome first-day jitters to beat UE Lady Warriors in five sets

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines overcame first-day jitters, beating University of the East, 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Lady Maroons skipper Diana Carlos led the way with 22 points, while Isa Molde scored 20.

Justine Dorog added 11 for The Lady Maroons looked set for a straight-sets win but crumbled before recovering for a to give coach Godfrey Okumu victory in his debut.

“First I'd like to say thanks and great job for UE, they played well,” said the Kenyan mentor.

“We put them under pressure the first two sets, and we relaxed, and we thought that we had won the game.” 

The Lady Maroons were in danger in the fourth set when the Lady Warriors scored nine straight points to take the lead, 21-13.

Isa Molde stopped the bleeding but UE stepped on the gas to force a decider.

“You saw in the fifth set, we started fighting back, our defense came back, as you saw, our normal defense. But, again, I would say they played well,” said Okumu.

UP, however, gave away 46 points to UE through errors in a match that took almost two hours to finish.

The Lady Maroons joined La Salle and National University in the upper half of the standings, while the Lady Warriors, University of Sto. Tomas and Adamson University are in the bottom half.

Judith Abil registered a career-high 12 points for UE, while Mary Ann Mendrez had 10 markers.
