UNIVERSITY of the East tandem Shaya Adorador and Kath Arado felt motivated to make Adamson pay for benching top players Jema Galanza, Eli Soyud and Chiara Permentilla to start their match in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament.

The UE veterans admitted that the AdU trio’s absence in the first set motivated them as they pulled off an upset, 25-22, 22-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-13, on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Adorador, who’s on her last playing year in the UAAP, scored seven of her 11 points in the fifth set alone.

“Bawat isa sa amin, talaga nag-step up. Walang team na mamaliitin talaga. Walang ganon. Kasi once na minaliit mo ‘yan, doon lalabas ‘yung laro ng isang team talaga,” she said.

Arado also stressed that seeing Galanza, Soyud and Permentilla on the bench fueled her to do her best.

The UE defense specialist remained true to her word as she finished with 24 digs and 32 excellent receptions in a match that took two hours and 10 minutes to finish.

UE snapped a 13-game losing skid dating back to last season’s first round.
