Kath Arado confident UE Lady Warriors ready to shed ‘losers’ tag
The Lady Warriors remain in the cellar but now they're brimming with confidence, according to Kath Arado. Marlo Cueto

WITH two straight wins in two weeks under a new coach, perennial strugglers University of the East Lady Warriors feel they have approached a turning point.

Its five-set victory over Adamson labeled by critics as a fluke, UE responded with a solid four-set performance against University of Sto. Tomas for its first back-to-back wins in six seasons in UAAP women’s volleyball.

Libero Kath Arado knows they face much work ahead under athletic director Rod Roque, who took over from Francis Vicente two weeks ago, but hopes the consecutive victories would help them shed the ‘losers’ tag.

“Sobrang speechless pa ako simula noong last time eh. Sa akin lang talaga, gusto ko talaga 'yung mabago talaga ang tingin nila sa UE,” said Arado, who had 28 digs and 32 excellent receptions.

The Lady Warriors had said they fet slighted as Adamson sat Jema Galanza and two other Lady Falcons in the opening set of their match on Sunday.

Now Arado is so pumped up with the wins, she said they never wanted to experience losing again.

“Noong unang game pa lang namin sa UAAP, 'yun talaga ang nasa isip ko na, ngayon na season na 'to, gusto ko talagang baguhin ang tingin nila sa UE, which is nangyayari naman talaga,” she said.

In just three matches, Roque, a former juniors champion coach, has matched Francis Vicente’s total wins record in three seasons (2-45).

“Kasi nga 'yung na-notice namin noon na takot kasi silang magkamali and when takot silang magkamali, lalo silang nagkakamali. Sa akin, hindi. O, nagkamali kayo? That's normal,” said Roque.

“Nobody is perfect but make sure babawi ka, 'di ba? Ginagawa naman nila, kaya natutuwa ako. Pag nagkamali sila, babawi,” he added.

The Lady Warriors, who scored its first win over UST in the Final Four era since 1994, last recorded back-to-back wins against University of the Philippines at the end of the first round and at the start of the second round in Season 74.
